Cycling in the South West Vendee
The South West of the Vendee is one of the most
beautiful parts
of
France from the Atlantic coast and its
glorious
beaches to the lush green countryside
and ancient
buildings. Vast areas of land
were
originally under water as the sea came
inland
for many miles. Over many centuries
the
Dutch built dykes to hold the water out and
then this vast project was taken over by
monks
who began the slow process of draining
the
land. We now have
an area that is perfectly
suited to the cyclist, very flat
and with few hills.
The French who are now encouraging cycling
are becoming aware of cyclists needs and are building many cycling
paths. The Vendee is a department that has many cycle
routes and we have 4 circular routes close to us, They range
from13km to 33km long. There are of course many others
further afield. Some of these take in the Atlantic coastline and others
the lush countryside but of course some cyclists just like to ride on the
quiet open french roads.
In each of our cottages we provide maps
indicating routes,
distances and the many things of
interest
to see on the way.
